Lego Mania

Carter has been on a Lego craze for a few days, after seeing the Lego Movie last week.  The other night he built Lego "avatars" for the family.  It REALLY gave us a laugh.  Dad talks on the phone a lot for Real Estate, check.  Mom is a huge birder....check.  Note the "baby brother"...yes well that's not just some fleeting wish.  We are expecting #4 in September....whether it is a boy or girl remains to be seen but obviously Carter is routing for the former.  My regular exercise is recognized with some pretty hefty looking dumbbells.  Carter is, of course, holding Legos.  Sienna is holding her cup.  Reese, who loves the color purple, is holding her baa baa.  And last but not least, Derrick has his nightly smoothie, which Carter calls his milkshake, and a huge drill.  Also what looks like a hard hat.  Very appropriate.  So here's the family in Lego.  Oh and if you do not yet have an avatar, have no fears....he has a list of other grandparents, cousins and aunts/uncles that he still wants to make!

He is so into Legos he was talking about dressing up as a Lego Man for Halloween this afternoon.  I kinda shrugged it off cuz you know, it's February. He disappeared for about 5 minutes and returned with his face, neck and hands all colored completely yellow with a marker.  Oh dear...is there some medical term or condition having to do with Lego obsession?

In other big news, Carter lost his second tooth tonight while he was at soccer...and I do mean literally lost.  I don't know how it's possible really...the first one to fall out, he accidentally swallowed.  When he came home tonight there was a hole in his mouth, but no tooth to leave for the Tooth Fairy...again.  It must have fallen out while he was running around at practice and he never even noticed.  Well, I guess we'd better write the Tooth Fairy another note to explain...

Gymnastics Super Star

Reese had her final class for the winter Gymnastics session and the parents/siblings were allowed to go into the gym and watch.  She really loved showing us all her skills!

Sienna had fun participating as well, even if most of it was too hard for her.

Reese was SOOOO proud of the ribbon she was awarded.  She paper clipped it onto her leotard as soon as we got home and then spent an hour writing a thank you note to her teachers for the ribbon.
Sienna decided to express her own style in Carter's hat and sunglasses.  She's got some attitude!  Her newest trick is taking the lid off her sippy cup...in the car!  She's done it two days in a row now, completely soaking herself.  When will she learn??

Family Fun

We took the kids for an exhausting but fun trip to the Science Center this afternoon.  Everyone had a blast, as usual.  Sienna was wanting to do all the things the big kids were doing...and then some.  The hit today was visiting Sports Works...we spent over an hour there and the kids LOVED doing the trampoline and the YouYo.  I think everyone will sleep well tonight.

Busy little beavers

Well, we've been VERY busy the last 4 days trying to get lots of bigger projects checked off our to-do list.  Derrick finally got our garage door fixed, the basement bathroom is tiled, and today everyone was "helping" start the kitchen tiling project.  It looks awesome so far...I'll post the finished photos soon.

I had a pair of pants to shorten, which I was absolutely dreading.  I found this tutorial on Pinterest which had you use the original hem and it turned out SO great.  I did it on a pair of yoga pants but have so many jeans that are too long...I'm so excited to try it out again on some of those.  I love it when a project actually goes better than anticipated!

Yesterday we enjoyed a lovely outing to the playground...the girls had a blast and it was almost warm enough to lose the coats.  I don't think Sienna was even walking last time we were there.  That was hard to remember as she RACED around everywhere yesterday...I couldn't keep up with her!

Sun and Snow

We got outside today to enjoy possibly....maybe...hopefully...the LAST day of this wretched ever-present snow! OK, OK, in all fairness they kids have been outside every day enjoying it.  Winter would be way more boring if it were just cold and no snow.  I'm sure they will miss it, but boy would I give an arm and a leg to see a little grass and maybe, just maybe, a brave little tulip or daffodil shoot poking out of the ground?  Too much to ask??
Derrick took the kids out to build a snowman just before dinner.  More than two hours later, they came in wet and weary and very proud to have built another mammoth beast in the yard.  How big will these things be when they are teenagers, that's all I want to know.  Maybe I should be saving up to buy them a backhoe for their snow-moving enjoyment!

18 Kids and some V-day Fun!

18 Kids....holy cow, what was I thinking!?!?!  But it was awesome.  We hosted a Home School Valentine's Day Party here yesterday for some friends and the kids had a blast learning about Valentine's Day, exchanging cards, and playing a bunch of fun little games I found on Pinterest.  I'm so thankful to have so many other wonderful friends as a support network of home schoolers and great kids for my kids to play with.  It was such a joy for me, truly, to see the kids interacting so positively together...no fights or arguments for the whole 2 hours we were together....lots of smiles and laughs!!!

Hmmm, so now that that party is checked off my to-do list....should I start planning for Easter???

I am MOM

It was an ever-so-romantic Valentine's Day yesterday.  I was sick as a dog (still am) and spent my morning going to the dentist.  As I sat there, she began with the probing questions about my life...not sure why they see fit to do this when you have got multiple sharp objects probing around in your mouth and can't even give good answers to the questions.  But she rambled on about her daughter looking for a college.  When I mentioned Grove City as my Alma mater, she laughed and said it was "too academic" for her daughter.  The top priority was a school with a really good football team.  Well, I tried to interject with how much I loved Grove City and the wonderful friends I made there and how important an academic school is, and she looked me in the face and said, "Yes, but does it really matter?  I mean, look at you now."  Shock...unbelief...dismay...I cannot believe another woman and mother would say that just because I chose to leave the professional sector and stay at home with my kids.

I want to make this very clear, I loved college and I think it shaped so much of who I am today...it was invaluable both in a professional sense and for personal development.  I loved the job I left when I had Carter.  I read and reread my final performance review probably 20 times with tears in my eyes because I felt really fulfilled in my job, liked my boss, was doing really well in the company with huge potential for advancement.  But more importantly, I knew, and had always known, I wanted to be at home with my babies...wanted to be the one who was raising them.  And I am so unimaginably blessed to have a husband with the same values who is able and willing to be the one to work so I can be here.

Yesterday, on a day when Sienna literally kept me on my toes from before sun-up until bedtime, I was a little peeved to be pondering my value to society.  We started the day at 6:20 AM with her throwing a tempter tantrum because she saw a lollipop on the counter and I wouldn't give it to her for breakfast.  This was followed by me getting her a real breakfast and nearly falling on my face because I slipped on a bead necklace she'd thrown on the floor...this caused me to drop my own breakfast and in the process of trying not to fall on my face, stepping backwards on her cup, which she'd also thrown on the floor, causing it to fly into the wall and pop open, shooting water everywhere.  Throughout the day I caught her coloring the wood floor with a pencil, coloring the fridge three different times with markers the kids kept dropping on the floor.  We were upstairs in my bathroom where I was trying to get dressed and she emptied out both bathroom cabinets, was ripping open boxes of bar soap from the closet, dumped out a huge box of tampons onto the floor and was tearing them open.  Then she heard the phone ring, yelled "Nani", because she thinks everyone who calls is my mom, and ran out into the bedroom to grab it and bring it back in to me.  Fortunately she didn't turn it on since it was a work call for Derrick!  Later, back downstairs I caught her scrubbing the hallway wall with the toilet brush....ewwww!!!  She was into her daily chair climbing routine, emptying my kitchen cupboards of pots, pans, lids, and bottles.  She got into the tissues and was pulling them out of the box as fast as her little hands could move.  She was begging for the same snack that she saw Reese eating and then proceeded to take it right out to the couch and dump it (cereal) out all over the couch.  When the kids were watching a movie, she kept going out and turning the TV off.  Reese was sitting in a rocking chair while trying to watch the movie and she kept going over to it and rocking it as hard as she could.  And after dinner, she somehow got her little fingers on an extra hamburger patty that was sitting on the table and was walking around the family room with it.  She should have had "Chaos" for a middle name....and this was all in just one day.

Yup, look at me now!

Am I a value to society or a drain on it?  Does the fact that I am not using my degree (Business) in a professional setting make me lazy or unproductive or less valuable?  Or is there perhaps application for the things I learned in the everyday life of being a mom?  I always dread filling out forms where it has a space for Profession.  Do I put "n/a", "homemaker", "Stay-at-home-mom".  I really don't feel that any of those adequately describes what I do.

Someday, when my kids are older, I do hope I'll have enough brain cells left to work again.  Or maybe I'll write a best-selling book.  Or maybe I'll continue to be at home and look back over these years I've spent with fond memories, zero regrets, and not-a-small sigh of relief that I've managed to survive it all. Regardless of how the rest of my years play out, I will never regret my education.

What Not to Wear

What better way to start your day than with a little bling bling?  You know, that's my first thought at 7 AM when I first get out of bed. "I think today I will dress up like Wonder Woman and put on 20 necklaces!!!"  Oh to be so carefree....

Not only did we have an early morning costume party, but the girls also got a fun bath in the big tub right after breakfast...just because.  (No, not just because I am a cool mom who loves to do fun things with her kids...just because I've literally exhausted every possible thing we can think to do inside the house during all this yucky winter weather).

Board Game Purgatory

I think I've mentioned that Reese is in a bit of a board game obsession lately...I mean literally she wakes up in the morning and the first thing she says is, "I want to play board games!"  So every morning we play a game now if there are even a few quiet minutes before the beast, (oh I mean Sienna) wakes up.  This morning after 4 exhilarating rounds of  one-on-one "Spot It" she ran down into the basement and brought up Sorry. Now my tolerance for Board games is limited.  I know that's a horrible attitude to have and I should just suck it up and play...but I can't stand games that last longer than about 5 minutes with kids.  It's infinitely harder with a toddler who likes to eat and throw and run away with various pieces throughout the game.  So I strongly suggested we save Sorry for another time.  She, with much pouting and whining, agreed to find another game that wouldn't be as hard to play with the baby around.  And then she brought up Monopoly.  Sigh...

I dragged the kids to the Children's Museum this afternoon...yes dragged.  Well, the girls were agreeable to go but you would have thought I'd told Carter we were going to the dentist or something.  I swear...these kids are homebodies to the max.  Anyway, since we lasted over three hours there, I'm guessing it wasn't that awful.  While there, Reese had another one of her epic restroom stops.  Of course all 4 of us were crammed in the family stall...the museum was close to closing and then it happened...  Carter was complaining, "Reese just hurry up.  I'm SO BORED.  Reese when are you going to be done?"  I was getting pretty impatient too, I'll admit.  Hanging in a gross public restroom is about the last place I want to be with three kids.  Reese, handled it all in stride, and very calmly said to me, "Mama, just count to 100 and then maybe I'll be done."  Where does she come up with this stuff???

Tonight after dinner, Sienna very clearly said "Radar" to the dog about three times.  Yep, she can say Radar but still refuses to say Dada.  Poor Derrick!

Naked Ski Jumping

The kids were watching Olympic Ski Jumping this afternoon and got quite a kick out of it apparently.  Derrick told them after dinner he was going to go outside and Reese immediately started begging to go out with him.  "We can do ski jumping in the backyard!"  Derrick asked her, "Do you know how to ski jump?"  "Yes," she said, "I learned how by watching it on TV."

Later in the evening, Carter set up a huge pile of pillows and the cushions removed from the couch and both kids were diving off the couch onto the cushions in their own mock "ski jumping" competition.  Both got hot and sweaty, so naturally (naturally) both removed their shirts, and put on their superhero capes and continued to jump away.  It was quite the spectacle.

In the bath that followed, Carter was being his typical contradictory self regarding the temperature of the water.  "It's so hot.  IT'S HOT!  I can't sit down it's SO HOT!"  (Meanwhile, Reese and Sienna are both quietly sitting in the same water.)  Not 10 seconds later, he's sitting and says, "I'm cold!"  Derrick pours water over his head, "Ouch, that's so HOT!"  Can't win....just...can't...win.

R2D2 and Really Large Cockroaches

We enjoyed another museum outing today with some friends to the Science Center.  It's pretty crazy to think it's been almost two years since I've been there.  I was trying to tell the kids about it before we went and pulled up a couple of pictures of us there in January of 2011.  It is uncanny how much Reese looks like Sienna at that age. (see three pics from another SC trip in 2011)

Carter & Reese 2011

Reese 2011

Reese 2011
Carter was super-psyche to see C3PO and R2D2.  All three kids enjoyed the trains and the fish.  Sienna soaked it all up and enjoyed everything.  Carter and Reese even got to "pet" a Madagascar Hissing Cockroach....ewww!
Of course when we got home and Derrick asked them about the morning:

D: What did you like about it?
R: "I don't know''
D: Well what did you do there
R: "I don't know"
Me: Did you get to pet a neat creature?
R: "I don't know"
D: Can you remember anything that you liked?
R: I can't remember anything.

Yes, that is an enormous cockroach!
Always makes me feel like the effort was all worth it!
